Jordy Baende Eliko Etafe
Sharif is from Fayetteville, NC and currently works as a teacher at Southern School of Energy and Sustainability. He teaches math and enjoys seeing his students’ progress in their studies. Thompson received his Bachelor’s degree in Math and Physics from North Carolina Central University and has plans to return to school for his Master’s in Engineering. Thompson has always helped people with math as long as he can remember. He tutored professionally for 6 years, and volunteers at a local church by tutoring youth.
Elyse is from Georgia where she earned her BS in Mathematics. She moved to South Carolina and achieved her MAT in Middle Level Mathematics Education with teaching license. While in school, she tutored mainly mathematics and ACT/SAT Test prep for a corporate company for 10 years in Georgia & both Carolinas. She taught middle and high school in Spartanburg County, SC for 5 years. She now lives in North Carolina and is currently obtaining her PhD in Learning and Teaching in STEM Education with a focus on Mathematics & Statistics Education at North Carolina State University. She is projected to graduate May 2020!
Taylor was born and raised in Raleigh, NC. She graduated from Leesville Road High and attended NC Central University. She earned a B.S. in Mathematics and Secondary Education. She currently teaches at Knightdale High School where she serves as the Math 2 PLT lead and a Senior Champion to encourage and advocate for at risk students of the Senior Class. Her passion is building healthy, long-lasting relationships with students while igniting the love of learning. She believes that everyone should live on purpose by expanding their horizons and stepping outside of their comfort zone. Taylor loves watching HGTV, going to/watching football games, and Sunday dinners with family. She loves to create budgets and her favorite food is macaroni and cheese.
Ebone' was a high school mathematics teacher at J.D. Clement Early College High School. Before she began her journey teaching she received her Bachelors of Science in Mathematics at North Carolina Central University. While attending NCCU, she had the opportunity to tutor various college math courses and teach 8th grade math through a non-profit organization, Student U. She is recently married and enjoys being a stay-at-home mom to her baby girl and Shih Tzu.
Nakisha was raised in Virginia Beach, VA and has been an honor student for the duration of her academic career. She began her career as a tutor as early as fifth grade and continued tutoring while she was in college. She has always had a knack for problem-solving and numbers as well as a heart for people and serving. She enjoys teaching Algebra and Accounting.
Jasmine was born and raised in Durham, NC. She is in her 8th year of teaching Mathematics. She has taught at both the middle and high school level. She is currently teaching Math 8 and Math 1 at Rogers-Herr Middle School. Adams received her Bachelor’s degree in Mathematics from Averett University, and her Master’s in K-12 Studies Curriculum from Capella University. In addition to teaching, she also coaches multiple sports to help continuously build positive relationships with students. She enjoys teaching and working with young people to help them reach their full potential.
Jasmine was born and raised in Durham, NC. In addition to being a teacher's assistant at a local preschool, she is a student at North Carolina Central University. Her major is elementary education with a concentration in mathematics. Ms. Smith wants to pass on her love of math to her students and give them the necessary tools to excel. She loves helping kids solve problems as well as challenge themselves. Ms. Smith also enjoys reading and writing.
Myrlene is from Cary, NC and currently works as a teacher at Green Level High School. She co-teaches Math 1 and Math 2 and teaches Curriculum Assistance. Reid received her Bachelor’s degree in Special Education from The University of North Carolina at Charlotte and has plans to return to school for her Master’s in Communicative Sciences and Disorders. Her passion is helping students work through academic frustrations and find a love for learning. Myrlene enjoys cooking, watching Netflix, and spending time with her family and friends in her spare time.
Amber is from Roxboro, NC and is a junior at North Carolina State University majoring in Mathematics Education with a specialization in Middle Grades (6-9). She began her career in education by working at a tutoring center while still in high school and has been passionate about teaching ever since then! In addition to working and being a full-time student, Amber is extremely active in the NC Grange, a grassroots, community service based organization with roots in farming and agriculture.
Maureen is currently in her 14th year of teaching, with the last 6 with Durham Public Schools at Hillside High School. She earned her Bachelor's Degree from Bowling Green State University (Ohio) and is licensed as a highly qualified teacher in grades 6-12. She has served in various positions in her years in education including coach, curriculum development and mapping, mentor teacher, co-chair of PCS Freshman Academy, and Yearbook adviser. She has also led various professional development sessions on End of Course (EOC) Best Practices and Co-teaching with Exceptional Children. She is married and has three human children and 5 furry children. She enjoys spending time with her husband and reading.
Lamont was born and raised on the Eastern Shore of Maryland. He graduated from the University of Maryland College Park with a Bachelors of Arts Degree in Secondary Education with a concentration in Social Studies. He has taught for 14 years in DC Charter schools, Prince George's County Public Schools(MD), Durham Public Schools, and is currently employed by Wake County Public Schools. In his free time, he loves to listen to music, watch sports, and learning new things. His motto is "Never Stop Learning".
Michael is a graduate of McDaniel University (in English and Education). He did PhD work at Indiana University, and has also completed programs at the National Shakespeare Conservatory and the Folger Shakespeare Library, as well as coursework from Stanford, Harvard, and Georgetown. He has nearly twenty years of high school and middle school classroom teaching experience in the USA, plus nearly ten years of university, college, and junior college classroom teaching experience in Japan. He has won numerous local, state, and several national awards for excellence and innovation in teaching, including a “Special Commendation” from the Maryland’s Department of Education. In his free time, as “Micheal Akutagawa”, he is a radio DJ at WXDU 88.7 FM (Duke University) and the curator of the station’s weekly jazz program. He also reads and performs his own creative work onstage and at area Open Mics.
Kandyss is originally from Edgecombe County, NC. She earned a Bachelor of Science in Public Health (Environmental Heath Science) from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and a Master of Science in Counselor Education from East Carolina University. She has worked in education for over 12 years, serving students from grades K through 12, and she currently works as a school counselor at Knightdale High School. She is married with two children and enjoys spending time with her family.
Shaitia, aka “Ms. Shai” is a graduate of the University of Miami where she received her Bachelor of Science in Public Health. She has since worked as a non-profit science educator in Florida and moved to North Carolina to pursue her Master of Science. Shaitia is a graduate of several North Carolina science enrichment programs that include SMDEP at Duke, as well as SEP and MED at UNC-CH. She is passionate about STEM education and helping students reach their full potential. As a tutor, she is adept at taking challenging concepts and simplifying them to aid in students’ success.
Cole is a student at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill pursuing Bachelor's Degrees in History and Religious Studies with an English minor. They plan to pursue a career in education, starting in substitute teaching. They enjoy asking, and trying to answer, big philosophical questions and finding patterns in historical and cultural records. Cole can be found doing logic and math puzzles or reading in their free time, often while listening to music or true crime podcasts.
Tina is a student in the English Secondary Education program at North Carolina State University and received an Associates degree in Art with a concentration in English Literature from Wake Technical Community College. As a high school student, she tutored middle school students in music theory and she currently volunteers with the Wake Forest High School marching band. Tina has been tutoring for over four years and greatly enjoys the feeling of helping others overcome their academic struggles. She is a member of multiple Honor Societies that specialize in the betterment of one's community and self, as well as a mutual love of teaching and education. She is passionate about teaching literature and grammar, music theory, choir, and the trumpet. Tina is a published poet in The Wake Review and can be found either reading, writing, or watching crime shows with her cat, Fig, during her free time.
Andrew is a native from Winston-Salem, NC, and currently resides in Whitsett, NC. He has been employed at Laboratory Corporation of America as a Lab Technologist since 2011. He received his BS in Chemistry & minor in Mathematics from Appalachian State University and is a member of the American Chemical Society & Troop 942 Eagle scouts. He has two years of experience in tutoring that range from Algebra I to Calculus to General Chemistry. Andrew has a strong passion for all sports, was an all-conference track & cross country runner in high school & loves to sing whenever given the chance. He loves all sciences, especially Chemistry and Mathematics. He hopes to seek a Masters/PhD in Chemistry and teach at the collegiate level sometime in the future.
Jordy is a first-year graduate school student at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill that has earned a Bachelors of Science degree in Biochemistry at Elon University in 2018. He intends to pursue medicine and is passionate about the scientific world. Jordy has three years of tutoring under his belt as he tutored college physics, general and organic chemistry and French at Elon University. Fun facts about Jordy include the fact that he was born and raised in Belgium, making French his first language and that he is a sports fanatic, especially when it comes to soccer and basketball.
Richard, aka “Professor T”, is an educator by trade with 15 years of college classroom teaching experience and three decades as a mathematics tutor. He holds a Master of Science degree in Education and a Bachelor of Science degree in Computer Science, both from Radford University in Virginia. Richard is a member of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc., as well as several academic honor societies in his field. "Professor T" currently teaches computer programming at Durham Technical Community College, and serves as Head Trainer at 9Round Triangle NC, a Kickboxing Fitness studio in Raleigh, NC.
Brittany has been teaching with Durham Public Schools since 2011. She earned her Bachelor’s Degree from UNC Chapel Hill and a Masters in Teaching from Duke University. Her leadership roles include being the English Department Chair, a Beginning Teacher Mentor, and the Upward Bound High School Coordinator. She has served as a Durham Public Schools district review instructor for the ACT, English II EOC, and AP English Literature and Composition exam. In addition to having served as a Senior Class and National Honor Society advisor at her school, she has also served as a curriculum writer for English III and English IV Unit Roadmaps provided to Durham Public School teachers and as a mentor in the Duke MAT Program. In the 2016-2017 school year she was recognized as a Durham Public Schools District Semi-Finalist for teacher of the year.
LaTonya Bufford is originally from Birmingham Alabama were she earned a BS in Health Information Management from the University of Alabama at Birmingham and an MA in Business Executive Leadership from Christian Brothers University in Memphis. She has worked in the pharmaceutical research and development industry for the past 17 years as a Project Data Manager. LaTonya also served as the president of Toastmasters International of the southern region for her former employer Medtronic in Memphis Tennessee. While serving as the president she earned her Competent Communicator certificate. In her current role as Senior, Manager in Data Management; she has presented both nationally and internationally and enjoys meeting new people and helping them overcome their fear of speaking in public.
