Mr. Thompson is from Fayetteville, NC and currently works as a teacher at Southern School of Energy and Sustainability. He teaches math and enjoys seeing his students’ progress in their studies. Thompson received his Bachelor’s degree in Math and Physics from North Carolina Central University and has to return to school for his Master’s in Engineering. Thompson has always helped people with math as long as he can remember. He tutored professionally for 6 years, and volunteers at a local church by tutoring youth.
Mrs. LeMay is a veteran Special Education teacher of 14 years. She received her BA in Psychology and a minor in Sociology from North Carolina State University. She then attended North Carolina Central University and receive her MA in School and Agency Counseling. While attending in NCCU, Ms. Watkins decided to begin her career in education in the classroom. She has worked for the Wake County Public School System for the past 14 years as a Department Head, Testing Coordinator, Multiple Subject Teacher and Beginning Teacher Mentor. Ms. Watkins is a daughter, sister, aunt and a proud "Dog Mom" of Chip, a pug mix.
Ms. Outlaw is a second year master’s student at NC State University (NCSU) studying Food Science with a minor in Food Safety. For her graduate work, she is focusing on assay design methods for a sensitive and rapid detection method for Norovirus. She is also the 2016-2017 secretary for the Food Science Club at NCSU. She graduated cum laude from North Carolina Central University with a B.S. in Pharmaceutical Sciences and a minor in Chemistry. During her undergraduate studies, she was inducted as a member of Phi Eta Sigma National Honor Society, in addition to the Golden Key International Honour Society where she served on the executive board during the 2014-2015 school year. She is a kind, welcoming person who will challenge and enhance students’ overall academics.
Ms. Hall is originally from New Jersey, but has been in North Carolina for a little over a year. She received her B.A. degree in Journalism from Rutgers University and her Masters of Science in Educational Leadership from Walden University. Ms. Hall has been teaching for about 16 years. She has taught and tutored students in grades 3-8. She currently teaches 4th grade. Ms. Hall has 4 sisters and 2 brothers and a host of nieces and nephews. She currently resides in Durham with her cat, Patches.
Mr. Tillies aka “Professor T”, is an educator by trade with 11 years of college classroom teaching experience and over 25 years as a mathematics tutor. He holds a Master of Science degree in Education and a Bachelor of Science degree in Computer Science, both from Radford University in Virginia. Richard is a member of Kappa Mu Epsilon (Mathematics), Kappa Delta Pi (Education), and Upsilon Pi Epsilon (Computer Science) collegiate honor fraternities. Outside of the education field, "Professor T" is the Managing Partner and Head Trainer at a Kickboxing Fitness studio in Raleigh, NC.
Ms. Wiggins is an educator with more than 20 years of experience. She is the partial product of Durham Public Schools, having moved to Durham in the early 1980’s and completing eighth grade through high school at the top of her class. Ms. Wiggins is a proud alumnus of Tuskegee University with degrees in Electrical Engineering and Physics. Ms. Wiggins always had a passion for working with youth, and decided to embark on a journey to teach after working for 6 years in engineering with various corporations. She began her teaching career in Florida, eventually relocating back home to North Carolina to complete her teaching credentials at North Carolina Central University. Ms. Wiggins has taught numerous courses from varying levels of math through honors/AP/IB, science, reading, and SAT/ACT test prep to middle and high school students. Ms. Wiggins truly believes that, "Children are the future. Teach them well and let them lead the way.”
Ms. Smith is from Georgia where she earned her BS in Mathematics. She moved to South Carolina and achieved her MAT in Middle Level Mathematics with teaching license. She taught middle and high school in Spartanburg County, SC for 5 years. Now, she lives in North Carolina and currently obtaining her PhD in Learning and Teaching in STEM Education with a focus on Mathematics & Statistics Education at North Carolina State University. She has tutored mathematics and ACT/SAT Test prep for a corporate company for the past 8 years in the Carolinas.
Ms. Braxton was born and raised in Raleigh, NC. She graduated from Leesville Road High and attended NC Central University. She earned a B.S. in Mathematics and Secondary Education. She currently teaches at Knightdale High School where she serves as the Math 2 PLT lead and a Senior Champion to encourage and advocate for at risk students of the Senior Class. Her passion is building healthy, long-lasting relationships with students while igniting the love of learning. She believes that everyone should live on purpose by expanding their horizons and stepping outside of their comfort zone. Taylor loves watching HGTV, going to/watching football games, and Sunday dinners with family. She loves to create budgets and her favorite food is macaroni and cheese.
Ms. Beja-Glasser is from Chapel Hill, NC and currently attends UNC at Chapel Hill, where she is pursuing a Bachelor of Science in Statistics in Analytics. She has been a tutor for two years and specializes in math, Spanish, and test prep. She was also a teacher assistant at Chapel Hill High School for her Spanish and science teachers. She is passionate about learning and helping others learn. Besides academics, she enjoys spending time with her family and pets (Bailey the dog and Nala the cat), reading comic books, cooking, watching movies, and reading science fiction novels.
Mr. Luna is from the mountains of Asheville, NC, and currently attends UNC Chapel Hill. While undecided, he is interested in majoring in Psychology, Computer Science, or a Natural Science. He has experience tutoring students for the ACT, and as an Eagle Scout, has volunteered hundreds of hours towards the mentorship of younger scouts and improving his Asheville community. Robbie graduated 3rd in his high school class and spends his time on campus involved with Cru Christian Ministry and Friendly Tabletop Gaming. He also enjoys playing the piano, visiting the gym, and exploring new interests.
Mr. Webster grew up in Holly Springs, NC and attended Needham B. Broughton High School, where he graduated in the top 10% of his class with an International Baccalaureate Diploma. With a strong passion for mathematics, he took AP Calculus BC as a junior and made a 5/5 on the exam. He is currently a sophomore Economics/Statistics double major at UNC Chapel Hill, and he currently works as an Undergraduate Learning Assistant for the Economics Department. He has enthusiasm not only for the subjects he studies, but also for helping his peers and creating a positive support environment.
Ms. Hendley is originally from Savannah, GA, but grew up in Tampa, FL. She received her B.S. in Applied and Computational Mathematics from Florida State University and is currently working on her M.A. in Analytical Political Economy at Duke University. She has taught AP Statistics, Trigonometry, Advanced Functions and Modeling, Algebra 1 (Honors), Geometry Honors, Math Analysis, Advanced Topics in Mathematics and Analytic Geometry throughout her four-year career as a high school math teacher. She is also involved in the Women and Mathematics Mentoring Program.
Ms. Ali is a junior accounting and finance major at North Carolina Central University (NCCU). She is from Philadelphia, PA and came to North Carolina to attend NCCU. She is the president of her school's chapter of National Association of Black Accountants and a member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. She loves mathematics and using her analytical skills. In her spare time, she loves traveling and trying new foods.
Mr. Will Connelly is originally from Freeport, Maine, but currently lives in Durham. He works for UNC as a program assistant in the recycling department. He worked as the after school tutor facilitator for Families Moving Forward for two years and has experience tutoring Math, English, Science, Social Science, ACT, SAT and TOEFL. He is passionate about meeting students and helping them reach their highest academic potential.
Mr. Khaja is a recent graduate of the Gillings School of Global Public Health at UNC Chapel Hill with a degree in nutritional biochemistry. He now works as a medical scribe at UNC Hospitals, and hopes to pursue a career in medicine in the coming years. He has a passion for working with the youth, and volunteers at his mosque and youth group as a counselor and advisor. Outside of academics, he loves to play basketball, hike, and cook!
Mr. Marco Chumbimuni is an undergraduate student at UNC-Chapel Hill, from the humble town of Lenoir, NC. He is pursuing a Bachelor of Science in Psychology, a Neuroscience minor. He has 2 years of tutoring experience, including a year working at the community college where he studied. He worked in the Academic Support Center with both adult and high school students. His strong subject areaa are mathematics (up to Calculus II), introductory-level sciences (ie. biology, anatomy & physiology, and chemistry), and ESL/Spanish. He is passionate about education; his personal belief is that education is the key to succeeding no matter the starting point. He is prepared to work with individuals, encouraging them to find their optimal way of learning at school- gaining a higher comprehensive of understanding rather than just studying for the exam.
Ms. Midder was raised in Virginia Beach, VA and has been an honor student for the duration of her academic career. She began her career as a tutor as early as fifth grade and continued tutoring while she was in college. She has always had a knack for problem-solving and numbers as well as a heart for people and serving. She enjoys teaching Algebra and Accounting.
Ms. Novotny has been teaching for 5 years at Hillside High School (HHS). After receiving her Bachelor's in English degree from Allegheny College in Pennsylvania, Ms. Novotny received her license through the NCTEACH program at NC State. She is currently the New Teacher mentor and serves as the English Department Chair at HHS. She has led multiple professional development sessions for the district on English II EOC instruction and writing across the curriculum. In addition to serving as a curriculum writer for Edgecomb County and Durham County, Ms. Novotny has also helped create the Roadmaps for English II teachers for DPS. She is a huge Pittsburgh Steelers fan and the proud mother of three four-legged creatures (Ben, Izzy, and Bella). She loves working with students and watching them grow and learn.
Mrs. White is currently in her 14th year of teaching, with the last 6 with Durham Public Schools at Hillside High School. She earned her Bachelor's Degree from Bowling Green State University (Ohio) and is licensed as a highly qualified teacher in grades 6-12. She has served in various positions in her years in education including coach, curriculum development and mapping, mentor teacher, co-chair of PCS Freshman Academy, and Yearbook adviser. She has also led various professional development sessions on End of Course (EOC) Best Practices and Co-teaching with Exceptional Children. She is married and has three human children and 5 furry children. She enjoys spending time with her husband and reading.
Ms. Thompson is passionate about education and has spent more than a decade supporting students and professionals as they work to improve various skills in the areas of reading, writing, public speaking, leadership and professional development. Over a 12-year period, she has served in various positions as a Training Specialist, Tutor, Student Advisor and Facilitator. She has a diverse knowledge and the unique ability to simplify complex subjects, making them more palatable to the learner. She holds a Bachelor of Arts in English Language and Literature from Fayetteville State University, where she earned the distinction of Chancellor’s Scholar. She earned her Masters of Education from North Carolina State University, where she became a member of Kappa Delta Pi (International Honor Society in Education). Ms. Thompson’s enthusiasm for learning and helping others on their educational journey is contagious and is often echoed by the learners with whom she works. In her spare time, Ms. Thompson enjoys running half marathons, traveling, spending time with her family and reading.
Ms. Bufford is originally from Birmingham Alabama where she earned a BS in Health Information Management from the University of Alabama at Birmingham and an MA in Business Executive Leadership from Christian Brothers University in Memphis. She has worked in the pharmaceutical research and development industry for the past 17 years as a Project Data Manager. LaTonya also served as the president of Toastmasters International of the southern region. She also volunteers with several small organizations in Durham. She looks forward to and welcomes any opportunity to introduce public speaking to the youth as a way of building confidence and opening lines of communication. In her spare time she enjoys spending time with family and friends, biking, reading, painting, and traveling.
Mrs. Neal is a native of Durham, NC and currently resides in Person County. She is a graduate of the University of North Carolina at Greensboro where she received a Bachelor of Science Degree in Community Health Education. Mrs. Neal is licensed as a K-6 highly qualified teacher receiving her credentials from North Carolina Central University, and holds a Master of Public Administration degree from North Carolina Central University. She enjoys teaching and has over 20 years of teaching experience ranging from Pre-K - Community college. She also teaches youth bible study and Sunday school at her church and has edited a children's Christian book. Mrs. Neal is married and has two daughters.
Mr. Paschall was born in Harrisburg, PA, but graduated high school in Carlisle, PA. He attends UNC Chapel Hill as a student athlete on the track team where he majors in Information Science. His goal is to graduate and work in the field of network security. Starting as early as fifth grade, he volunteered to help kids with tutoring at his school. Throughout his life, he has always enjoyed helping others in anyway possible. He has also devoted much time in guiding those of all ages athletically on sports teams, and socially among his community at home. His passion to help others helps him understand how to create a positive and compassionate environment for everyone.
Ms. White is an experienced English tutor of 5 years. Having attended Texas State University pursuing a degree in Communications, she soon found that tutoring students and sharing her love for reading was a passion she wanted to allow to grow. Ms. White has taught elementary school-aged children that were a part of a church program and has helped many students of different age groups over the years. Ms. White truly believes that reading is fundamental and will work hard to show each student how rewarding reading, comprehending, and expressing themselves through writing can be.
Ms. Newsome has been teaching at Hillside High School for four years. She received her BS in Biology and her Masters in Education from the illustrious Winston-Salem State University. She teaches Earth Science at Hillside and is the lead teacher of the Hornet Academy. She is a loving person who enjoys spending time with her 5 siblings, parents and Goddaughter as often as possible.
Mr. Doub is a native from Winston-Salem, NC, and currently resides in Whitsett, NC. He has been employed at Laboratory Corporation of America as a Lab Technologist since 2011. He received his BS in Chemistry & minor in Mathematics from Appalachian State University and is a member of the American Chemical Society & Troop 942 Eagle scouts. He has two years of experience in tutoring that range from Algebra I to Calculus to General Chemistry. Andrew has a strong passion for all sports, was an all-conference track & cross country runner in high school & loves to sing whenever given the chance. He loves all sciences, especially Chemistry and Mathematics. He hopes to seek a Masters/PhD in Chemistry and teach at the collegiate level sometime in the future.
Ms. Curry-Chisolm is in her fourth year at North Carolina Central University studying Biology and Family and Consumer Science with concentrations in Pre-medicine,Child Development, and Family Relations. She will graduate in May 2018 with degrees in both fields. She conducts research at the United States Environmental Protection Agency, and has been a teaching assistant at North Carolina Central University for over 3 years. She is a focused and dedicated young woman with a passion for education, and the skills to help relay that knowledge.
Ms. Gonzalez is from Tucson, Arizona where she earned her BS in Public Health from the University of Arizona. She will be pursing her master’s in Maternal and Child Health at the University of North Carolina the coming year. She has worked with youth and families for the past two years specifically in the prevention of alcohol and substance abuse at a young age. Through these and other experiences, Ms. Gonzalez is passionate about helping others especially through education. She is a positive individual who loves to travel and challenge herself.
